December 24, 2004: The Americans request Canada to deploy another Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) to Afghanistan.
June 1, 2005: The Canadian Government authorize the deployment of another Special Operations Task Force to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom
for a period of one year. This mission is continually renewed
until the end of Canadian combat operations in 2011.
August 13, 2005: Surviving Canadian First Special Service Force veterans are awarded the U.S. Combat Infantryman Badge at the annual reunion as a result of 40 years of lobbying the U.S. Congress.
October 18 2005: The Chief of Defence Staff issues his “CDS Planning Guidance – Canadian Forces Transformation,” which includes a Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM).
September 11, 2001: Nineteen members of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization hijack and fly four commercial aircraft into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York and into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. igniting a decades long war against terror. The allied coalition response is initially heavily focused on Special Operations Forces.
December 2001: A Canadian JTF 2 Assault Troop is deployed to Afghanistan as a Special Operations Task Force, part of the U.S. Operation Enduring Freedom. Their performance earns them the trust and respect of US Commanders and JTF 2 becomes a first choice unit in the field.
April 22, 2002: The Joint Nuclear Biological Chemical Defence (JNBCD) Company is created in CFB Trenton. It forms the Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence (CBRN) Response Team (RT) which is the DND component of the National CBRN RT with the RCMP and Public Health Agency of Canada.
November 2002: The JTF 2 task force is returned to Canada. However, a JTF 2 component remains in Afghanistan as both close personnel protection for Canadian senior leaders in ISAF as well as a liaison cell to the Canadian ISAF contingent.
December, 2003: The Joint Nuclear Biological Chemical Defence Company is assigned to provide Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence support to JTF 2.
December 7 2004: President George Bush awards the JTF 2 component of Task Force K-Bar a Secretary of the Navy, Presidential Unit Citation. 2003: JTF2 increased efforts to cultivate links to the FSSF association and signalled its desire to build historical links to the Force.
