    CONTINUED Click for More August 11: Warning order issued for the Force’s next mission, Operation Dragoon, the landing on the French Mediterranean coast and the subsequent destruction of German Army Group G. One FSSF objective was to seize two islands of the Islands d’Hyeres group, Ile de Port-Cros and Ile du Levant. August 14: FSSF boards the ships to move to their staging areas. August 15: 1st Regiment, FSSF begins their assault on Port Cros. Simultaneously, 2nd and 3rd Regiments attack Ile du Levant. 2nd Regiment had to scale 80m to 100m cliffs in order to continue their assault. 3rd Regiment had extremely heavy swells and large boulders to deal with as they landed. After some resistance, both Regiments, together, secured Ile du Levant by 2300. August16: After heavy resistance by the defenders and the use of aircraft and naval bombardment in support of the FSSF, 1st Regiment secured Port-Cros Island. August 18: The Force is relocated to Sylvabelle for training and rest. August 20: The FSSF are tasked to move east to St Raphael. It was back to the mountains for the Force. August 21: General Frederick requests that the Force be attached to his Airborne Task Force, as they moved north toward Cannes. They became the right flank of the combined force, relieving the British 2nd Parachute Brigade. August 22: 1st and 3rd Regiments, having commenced their advance the previous day, reach the Siagne River. Their mission was to maintain contact with the enemy rear guard as they moved toward the French-Italian border. August 26: 2nd Regiment approaches Villeneuve-Loubet village and met a well entrenched enemy force, the largest they’d fought to date. After a series of firefights, the Force killed many of the Germans and had captured 72, with 100 wounded. The German escape route had been closed. August 30: The Force has liberated 22 towns and continues to push the Germans toward the border. Aided by naval gunfire support, the Force continues to move along the coast. End of August:Royal Canadian Beach Commando “W” was disbanded
