    Click for More January 22, 1986: Due to a rising threat of Terrorism, the Solicitor General of Canada creates the RCMP Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) responsible for countering terror threats and hostage rescue in Canada. The unit was based at Dwyer Hill,
    30 km from Ottawa.
    April 24, 1980: A group of Delta Force
    operators, US Army Rangers and
    US Air Force and Marine Corps pilots
    engage in a failed attempt to rescue 52
    hostages held inside Iran. This failure cost the
    lives of 8 service members after an aircraft collision.
    The subsequent investigation would result in the
    identified need for a permanent special operations capability.

    December 15, 1980: The Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) is established to coordinate the military’s special mission unit’s global operations, with the primary focus on global terrorism.

    April 16, 1987: Per the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the Defense Reorganization Act 1986, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is established. This is the first time in United States history that special operations forces (SOF) have been protected from disbandment by the regular force and establish their own funding stream directly through Congress.
