April 8, 1968: The Canadian Airborne Regiment (Can AB Regt) is officially stood-up in Griesbach Barracks, Edmonton, Alberta, providing Canada with a rapidly deployable force. The Cdn AB Regt quickly forges a reputation for undertaking tough, demanding and dynamic activities.Lt General Anderson, the commanding officer of the Airborne, ordered cross training and education with American and United Kingdom Special Forces in order to provide the Airborne with a special operations capability. The Airborne was directly connected to the First Special Service Force and carried FSSF battle honors on its regimental colours.
1966: There is an increased interest in special operations and rapid reaction forces due to the American experience in Vietnam. Lt. General Jean Allard, commander of the Force Mobile Command, wanted to develop this capability in the Canadian Army. He wanted a unit that was deployable globally in 48 hours.
May 12, 1966: Minister of Defence Paul Hellyer announced that the Force Mobile Command would establish an airborne regiment for rapid deployment.
