    April 1962: Kennedy pens a now-famous memorandum to the Army: “The Green Beret is a symbol of excellence, a badge of courage, a mark of distinction in the
    fight for freedom.”

    December 5, 1963: The 3rd Special Forces Group is established.
    April 15, 1960: The First Special Service Force (FSSF) is reconstituted and consolidated with the Ranger battalions. The FSSF then become the parent unit to all Special Forces groups in the US military. The Force is also considered the parent to, what is now, the three battalions of the US Army 75th Ranger Regiment.

    June 6, 1960: The 77th Special Forces Group is re-organized into the 7th Special Forces Group.

    September 21, 1961: The 5th Special Forces Group is formed

    October 12, 1961: President John F. Kennedy, newly elected to office and
    fascinated by the Special Forces and the concept of counterinsurgency
    visits Fort Bragg for a demonstration of the unit.
