December 25: The Force moves to assault Hill 720 to clear their way to take Mount Vischiatro and Mount Majo. These high points needed to be secured to ensure that 2nd Corps attack to destroy the
Winter Line could begin.

MEDITERRANEAN SEA
October 27: The Force heads to the Meditteranean theater of operations. Despite the dry hole in the Aleutians. Demolition expertise and knowledge of ranger operations made the FSSF suitable candidates for service in the Italian theater. They will be working for General Eisenhower.
November 20: After a three week journey from the United States, the Force arrives at their camp, a former German artillery barracks at Santa Maria Capua Vetere. They await their orders.
Late 1943: The Royal Canadian Navy creates its own commando capability changing the Combined Operations Beach Party Branch to the Beach Commandos “W” unit. The naval beach commando is trained in the control of landing crafts, ships and barges on beaches. They are also responsible for neutralizing beach obstacles, mines and booby traps.
2/3 December: FSSF approach their first objective in Italy, a former volcano held by the Germans, Monte la Difensa. After achieving surprise through a tough climb up the sheer face of the mountain, they capture the key mountain top which eluded three 5th Army attempts and enters them into military legend.
